About the GATE GG paper
GATE Geology & Geophysics is one of the more specialised papers in the GATE line-up, and its defining feature is a built-in track choice. Every candidate answers the same Part A, a 25-mark common section that tests foundational earth-science knowledge shared by geologists and geophysicists alike: the internal structure of the earth, isostasy, elementary seismology, geomorphic processes, basic structural geology, crystal symmetry, mineralogy and the outline of India’s stratigraphy. Nobody skips this part regardless of which specialisation they come from.
Where GG diverges from a typical GATE paper is what happens next. At the time of filling the application form, a candidate picks either Part B1 (Geology) or Part B2 (Geophysics), a 60-mark optional section, and that is the only section they will see in Part B on exam day. Part B1 goes deep into geomorphology, structural geology, igneous/sedimentary/metamorphic petrology, paleontology, stratigraphic principles, economic and resource geology, engineering geology and hydrogeology. Part B2 instead covers solid-earth geophysics, geodesy, earthquake seismology, potential-field methods (gravity, magnetic, electrical and electromagnetic prospecting), seismic exploration methods, well logging and the basics of geophysical inversion. The two optional sections carry identical marks and are not cross-scaled, so the decision is really about which body of knowledge you’re already strongest in, not about picking the “safer” option.
Because the sections diverge so sharply after Part A, most of a candidate’s study time and almost all of their previous-year-paper practice for Part B should stay confined to whichever track they registered for.
How to prepare
- Lock in your track before you plan a study schedule. Since the Part B choice is made at registration and cannot be changed later, decide early, ideally based on which subjects your degree already covered in depth.
- Treat Part A as shared ground and revise it continuously. It’s a fixed 25 marks regardless of track, and its topics (earth structure, geomorphology, basic structural geology, mineralogy, stratigraphy) also underpin much of Part B, so strengthening it pays twice.
- Go deep, not wide, inside your chosen Part B. With only one optional section in play, there’s no benefit to skimming the other track’s syllabus. Put that time into the finer sub-topics of your own section instead (e.g. fold/fault mechanics and petrographic identification for Geology; wave propagation and inversion theory for Geophysics).
- Filter previous year papers by section before solving them. Older GG papers mix questions from both Part B1 and Part B2 in the same PDF; pull out only the Part A questions plus the Part B questions from your track, otherwise your accuracy tracking will be misleading.
- Practice diagram- and data-heavy questions deliberately. GG rewards the ability to read stereonets, geological maps, seismograms and log traces quickly. This is a skill built through repetition, not last-minute revision.
A note on General Aptitude
General Aptitude is worth 15 marks in every GATE paper, GG included, and it sits outside both the common Part A and whichever Part B track you’ve chosen, meaning it’s the one section every GG candidate answers in exactly the same way. Because it draws on verbal and quantitative reasoning rather than earth-science recall, it’s usually the fastest 15 marks on the paper to secure with steady practice, and it’s worth treating as a fixed, non-negotiable part of your weekly revision rather than an afterthought before exam day.

How does the Geology vs Geophysics track choice work in GATE GG?

What is the overall exam pattern for GATE GG?
The paper totals 100 marks in 3 hours, split as follows: 15 marks General Aptitude (common to every GATE paper), 25 marks Part A (common Earth-science section, compulsory for all candidates), and 60 marks Part B (the Geology or Geophysics section chosen at registration). Questions are a mix of MCQ, MSQ and Numerical Answer Type.
Is there negative marking in GATE GG?
Yes, for MCQs: one-third mark deducted for a wrong answer on a 1-mark MCQ and two-thirds for a 2-mark MCQ. Numerical Answer Type questions carry no negative marking, and MSQs are evaluated with no negative marking as well.
Are GATE GG previous year papers useful for revision?
Yes, but check which optional section each paper's Part B belongs to before using it: a Geophysics aspirant solving old Part B1 (Geology) papers is largely wasting time outside the common Part A. Use full papers matching your chosen track, and treat Part A questions from every year as fair practice regardless of track.
