About the GATE CS paper
Computer Science & Information Technology (CS) is the most-attempted paper in GATE. It is a conceptual paper: rather than rewarding memorisation, it tests whether you can reason about algorithms, systems and computation under time pressure.
The paper rewards depth in a handful of high-weightage subjects. Algorithms, Operating Systems, Databases, Computer Networks and Theory of Computation together account for a large share of the 85 subject marks, while General Aptitude and Discrete Mathematics reliably contribute around 30 marks between them.
How to prepare
- Build concepts subject by subject. Do not start with previous year papers cold.
- Solve topic-wise PYQs after each subject so you see how that topic is actually asked.
- Move to year-wise papers under timed conditions once the syllabus is covered.
- Use mock tests to fix time management: most candidates lose marks to pace, not to lack of knowledge.
A note on General Aptitude
General Aptitude is 15 marks in every GATE paper and is the cheapest scoring section in the exam. Candidates routinely neglect it and lose easy marks. Budget a fixed slot for it each week.
