Frequently asked questions

How does section selection work in GATE XE?

Every candidate answers the compulsory Section A (Engineering Mathematics) and then picks exactly two optional sections out of B through H at the time of taking the exam itself, not at registration. You attempt only the two optional sections you choose on screen; the other five simply do not appear as scored sections for you.

Can I change my optional sections after registering for GATE XE?

The application form asks you to indicate a primary and a secondary optional section, but the actual choice is locked in only when you select which two sections to attempt on the exam interface during the test, so there is some flexibility right up to exam day.

Which optional sections should I pick for GATE XE?

The right pair depends on your undergraduate background and the department you are targeting at the postgraduate level: an aerospace or mechanical background usually pairs Fluid Mechanics with Solid Mechanics or Thermodynamics, while a materials or chemical background often leans toward Materials Science with Polymer Science.

Is the difficulty level the same across all optional sections of GATE XE?

The paper is designed so that each optional section carries the same 35 marks and a comparable question format, but year-to-year difficulty within any single section can still vary, which is why looking at several years of PYQs for your chosen sections matters more than looking at just one.
