Frequently asked questions

There's no PYQ history for GATE RA: how do I prepare without previous year papers?

GATE RA is genuinely new, so there are no RA-specific previous year papers to fall back on. The practical workaround is to borrow PYQs from the exams RA is built out of: GATE ME and GATE EE papers for the control systems, mechanics and circuits portions, and standard robotics/mechatronics coursework problems for kinematics and sensors/actuators: while treating the official syllabus PDF as the only authoritative source for scope, since there is no pattern of past questions to cross-check it against.

Is GATE RA confirmed as a new paper for GATE 2027, or is this speculative?

It is confirmed. IIT Madras, the GATE 2027 organising institute, has listed Robotics and Automation as a new test paper (code RA) in its official GATE 2027 announcements and published a syllabus PDF for it, alongside other syllabus revisions for the 2027 cycle.

What is the exam pattern for GATE RA?

100 marks in a 3-hour computer-based test: 15 marks General Aptitude, 60 marks from the compulsory Part A (Engineering Mathematics, Basics of Mechatronics, Principles of Robotics and Automation), and 25 marks from an optional Part B where a candidate picks either B1 (Electrical Engineering) or B2 (Mechanical Engineering) at the time of the exam.

Who is GATE RA meant for: which background fits best?

The syllabus is explicitly cross-disciplinary, drawing from mechanical, electrical and computer science fundamentals plus robotics-specific topics like kinematics and industrial automation. Mechanical, electrical, electronics, instrumentation, mechatronics and robotics-program graduates are all plausible candidates; the Part B choice (Electrical vs Mechanical) lets a candidate lean toward whichever half of their background is stronger.

Since there's no track record, is a GATE RA score risky for admissions or PSU recruitment?

This is an open question rather than a settled fact: as a first-year paper, RA has no track record of qualifying cutoffs, difficulty calibration or how institutes/PSUs will treat it relative to established papers like ME or EE. Candidates weighing RA against a more established paper should treat that uncertainty as a real planning factor, not a footnote.
