How many years of GATE NM previous papers actually exist to practise from?

Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering was added as a GATE paper starting in 2022 (first conducted by IIT Kharagpur), so there are only a handful of official papers on record. Solve every one of them more than once, and treat the syllabus PDF itself as the primary source for topic-wise numericals once the official pool runs out.

Does GATE NM assume a marine engineering degree, or can mechanical/civil students attempt it?

The syllabus is written to be self-contained: Applied Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics overlap heavily with a standard mechanical engineering curriculum, while ship-specific content (stability, resistance, propulsion, ship structures) is built up from first principles in the naval architecture textbooks. A mechanical or civil background covers roughly half the paper going in.

Which single topic gives the most trouble to first-time GATE NM candidates?

Stability and trim of ships: free surface effect, shifting centre of gravity, curves of statical stability and damage stability: tends to be the section where marks are lost, since it demands both a physical picture of a floating hull and comfort with the hydrostatic calculations behind it. It also recurs across multiple sub-topics in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, so weakness here compounds.

Is Marine Engineering (diesel engines, boilers, turbines) mostly descriptive, or does it carry numerical weight too?

Both. Sections on marine diesel engines, steam and gas turbines, and boilers include a meaningful chunk of descriptive/conceptual questions on construction and operating principles, but thermodynamic cycle calculations, specific fuel consumption and engine dynamics numericals also appear, so this section cannot be prepared as pure theory.
