Frequently asked questions

How is GATE IN different from GATE EE or GATE EC?

GATE IN shares circuits, control systems and analog/digital electronics with EE and EC, but adds a dedicated measurements and sensors component that those papers do not test: process instrumentation, transducers and signal conditioning are unique to the IN syllabus.

Which sections carry the most marks in GATE IN?

Control Systems and Measurements are consistently the two heaviest core sections, followed by Electrical Circuits and Machines; together with Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude they make up close to half the paper.

Is GATE IN a smaller candidate pool than CS or ME: does that change strategy?

Yes, fewer candidates attempt IN, but cutoffs and question difficulty are not lower on that account. The smaller syllabus size relative to CS or ME means each section is worth mastering fully rather than skimming, since there is less room to skip a topic and still cover the paper.

Can an Electronics or EIE graduate appear for GATE IN?

Yes. GATE does not restrict papers by degree branch: candidates from Electronics, EIE or allied backgrounds regularly appear for IN, especially if their coursework already overlaps with measurements and control systems.
