How many years of GATE GE previous papers actually exist to practise from?
Geomatics Engineering was added as a GATE paper starting in 2022, so unlike Civil or Mechanical there is only a handful of official papers available: every one of them is worth solving more than once, and gaps in the PYQ pool need to be filled with topic-wise practice from the syllabus rather than assumed away.
What is the difference between the Part B1 and Part B2 optional sections, and how do I pick one?
Part B1 (Surveying, Maps and Photogrammetry) leans on field surveying instruments, map projections and stereo-photogrammetry, while Part B2 (Digital Image Processing and Analysis) is built around satellite image corrections, enhancement and classification: pick based on which set of numericals you find faster to execute under time pressure, since only one is attempted and both carry the same 30 marks.
Do Remote Sensing, GNSS and GIS really matter more than core surveying for this exam?
Yes for Part A specifically: Engineering Mathematics, GIS, Remote Sensing and GNSS together make up the compulsory 55-mark Part A that every candidate attempts, while traditional field surveying and photogrammetry only appear if you choose the Part B1 optional section, so a candidate who picks Part B2 can clear GATE GE with comparatively little classical surveying depth.
Is a background in civil engineering or geoinformatics needed to attempt GATE GE?
No single background is assumed: candidates come from civil engineering, geoinformatics, geology and even computer science streams with a remote sensing elective, and the syllabus is self-contained enough that the mathematics, GIS and image-processing sections can be built up from standard textbooks without prior fieldwork experience.
