Frequently asked questions
Is GATE BT mostly biology or mostly engineering?
It is weighted toward biology. General Biology and Genetics/Cellular/Molecular Biology together typically account for close to 40 of the 85 subject marks, while Engineering Mathematics and the process/bioreactor topics make up the rest.
Do I need a biotechnology engineering background to attempt GATE BT?
No. Many aspirants come from B.Tech Biotechnology, but B.Sc/M.Sc Life Sciences and even Biochemistry or Microbiology backgrounds are common, since the paper draws heavily on core life-science subjects rather than engineering design.
How is Bioprocess Engineering different from Fundamentals of Biological Engineering in this syllabus?
Fundamentals of Biological Engineering covers bioreaction kinetics, reactor types and enzyme immobilisation as underlying principles, while Bioprocess Engineering and Process Biotechnology applies those principles to real upstream and downstream operations: media design, sterilisation, filtration and chromatography.
Is negative marking the same in GATE BT as in other GATE papers?
Yes. MCQs lose one-third mark for 1-mark questions and two-thirds for 2-mark questions, while MSQ and Numerical Answer Type questions carry no negative marking: the same scheme used across all GATE papers.
