What is the exam pattern for GATE AG?
65 questions for 100 marks in 3 hours: 15 marks of General Aptitude, 13 marks of Engineering Mathematics and the remaining 72 marks spread across the six core Agricultural Engineering sections, using MCQ, MSQ and Numerical Answer Type questions.
Which sections carry the highest weightage in GATE AG?
Soil and Water Conservation Engineering and Farm Machinery & Power together account for the largest share of subject marks, with Irrigation and Drainage Engineering close behind. Engineering Mathematics is a fixed 13 marks every year.
Is GATE AG harder to prepare for than core papers like Mechanical or Civil?
Not harder, but broader: AG borrows fluid mechanics and soil mechanics from Civil, thermodynamics and machine design from Mechanical, and adds agriculture-specific subjects like crop processing and dairy engineering that have no equivalent elsewhere, so there is less pre-existing coaching material to lean on.
Do previous year AG papers repeat concepts across years?
Yes, especially in Farm Power (IC engine numericals) and Irrigation (water requirement and duty-delta-base calculations), which are asked in some form almost every year, making PYQ practice disproportionately useful for this paper.
